Instead of that ghostly quiet that I had felt many years ago, strange tongues and voices fill Petra’s air. It’s what one expects at any major tourist attraction: the cheap T-shirts, the camel rides, the peddlers offering “genuine” artifacts and, at night, the nightclub with the ubiquitous belly dancer.
